First in a series. The dictionary defines “archetype” as “a perfect example or model of something.” The Kansas state motto is “Ad astra per aspera,” which means “to the stars through difficulties.” This series will focus on native Kansan track and cross-country athletes who are archetypes of that state motto, people and athletes who overcame remarkable difficulties to achieve amazing things. Some will be famous, others not so much, but they will all embody the traits that allowed them to reach the stars through difficulties.

For Khadian Kelly, the feeling of returning to the University of Kansas to pursue her professional career was pretty surreal. In fact, when she walked into the Wagnon Student-Athlete Center on her first day as Director of Compliance for Kansas Athletics, she was greeted by a mural painting that featured two of her best friends--former track and field athletes Charisse Bachus and Tiffany Cherry.Kelly attended KU and was part of the track and field squad from 2002-05, when she focused on horizontal jumps under coach Milan Donley before transferring to UMKC to pursue a nursing degree. At KU she achieved Athletics Director's Honor Roll status; at UMKC she earned all-conference athletic and academic honors as a track and field student-athlete.After earning her Bachelor's and Master's degrees at UMKC, Kelly (who was born in Jamaica) would go on to work in compliance at Ohio State and the University of Miami (Fla.) before returning to Lawrence in early 2013 to accept her current position.We caught up with her earlier this week to reflect on her career as a student-athlete, her unique heritage and her career path that led her back to the University of Kansas.

Sherre-Khan (Blackmon) Jones, a Houston, Texas native, ran track for the Jayhawks from 1998-2001. She currently holds the sixth fastest time for the indoor 600 yards. Also during her time here at Kansas, she met Marcellus Jones III in her Western Civilization class and the two married in 2004. They now live in Eudora, Kan., and have a one-year-old daughter, Maison. The couple is awaiting the arrival of another baby girl in February.

Living in Eldama, Kenya until he was 18, Benson Chesang decided to travel across the ocean to join the KU cross country and track & field teams and became a well-known distance runner in Kansas. While competing for KU from 2003-07, Chesang was KU's top runner his freshman and sophomore seasons. In 2004 he won the Big 12 Cross Country Championship and was named an All-Big 12 runner. Today, he can still be found in Lawrence, volunteering with the Jayhawk cross country and track & field teams while still competing in running events across the state and nation.

Former Kansas track & field great, Glenn Cunningham, will be inducted into the National Distance Running Hall of Fame it was announced last week. Cunningham, who will be honored in Utica, N.Y. in July, was a two-time national champion for the Jayhawks during his four-year Kansas career from 1931-34. He also competed in two Olympic Games, snagging silver in the 1,500 meters at the 1936 Games in Berlin.

Throwback Thursday: Warren Heylman Apr 19, 2012

Heylman is in rare company for many reasons. The Spokane, Wash. native graduated from Kansas in just six semesters as a part of the unique Navy V-12 program in the mid-1940s. Following his military career, the architectural engineering graduate went onto found Heylman Martin Architects in Spokane as well as keep up his recreational running career. The now 88-year old still runs five miles almost every day and had a successful appearance at the 2005 World Masters Games in Edmonton, where he finished in fourth place in the 100-meter dash.

It is a busy weekend across the country for Division I track and field programs, as teams gear up for conference championship action. The University of Kansas Jayhawks, who are competing in one of the fiercest leagues in the NCAA, will head to College Station, Texas for the 2012 Big 12 Indoor Championships. Former Kansas track and field coaching legend Bob Timmons was inducted into the USA Track and Field Hall of Fame Saturday night at the Jesse Owens Hall of Fame Banquet in St. Louis. Timmons coached at Kansas from 1966-88 and led the Jayhawks to 31 league titles as well as four national championships.

The KU women's 4X400 meter relay team broke the school record in the event Saturday afternoon at the Alex Wilson Last Chance Meet in South Bend, Ind. Senior Kendra Bradley, Freshman Diamond Dixon, Sophomore Denesha Morris, and Junior Shayla Wilson crossed the finish line in 3:35.65 which was .21 of a second faster than the previous mark set by Manning, Butler, Stowers, and Anderson during the 2008 season. On Saturday, the women finished fourth and were just 1.65 seconds from qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championships next weekend in College Station, TX.

Geubelle Takes First, Simpson Second in Long Jump at Arkansas Last Chance Mar 4, 2011

Kansas Sophomore Andrea Geubelle took first place in the women's long jump Friday afternoon at the Arkansas Last Chance Meet in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Geubelle jumped a distance of 6.18m (20-03.50ft.) on her fourth attempt. The mark was her longest of the year. Fellow sophomore Francine Simpson also had a top jump of 6.18m (20-03.50ft.) but finished second because her next best jump was shorter than Geubelle's. The mark was Simpson's second best of the season. Unfortunately, Geubelle and Simpson's jumps were just eight inches short of hitting the qualifying mark for the NCAA National Championships to be held next weekend. Sophomore Rebecca Neville and Junior Jamaica Collins also competed in the event, with Neville placing fourth on a jump of 5.73m (18-09.75ft.) and Collins placing seventh with a mark of 5.20m (17-00.75ft.), her best of the season.

Paralympian Kortney Clemons Trains with Kansas Track and Field Mar 4, 2011

Thirty-year-old Kortney Clemons is an outstanding and extremely decorated track and field athlete. He participates in the 100 meters, 200 meters and the long jump. He has earned numerous first place finishes in each event, qualified and competed against the world's best in international meets, broken the American record in the 200 meters this past January and is a member of the U.S. national team. Currently he is working toward earning a spot on the U.S. Team to compete in the 2012 Olympics to be held in London, and is doing so with the help of the Kansas track and field team. However, the most incredible thing about those accomplishments is that he's done it all on one leg.

Day Two Underway at Big 12 Indoor Championships Feb 26, 2011

The men's and women's track teams began the day with 42 members preparing to compete in Big 12 finals action. Sophomore Mason Finely is looking to defend his Big 12 title in the shot put while Andrea Guebelle is looking to bring home KU's second Big 12 championship in the women's triple jump. Freshman Diamond Dixon will be hoping to carry over her record-setting performance in the 400 meters last night, to the finals today at 4:05pm. Kyle Clemons will follow Dixon in the men's 400 meter finals at 4:15. Last night in the prelims, Clemons ran the second fastest 400 meters in school history. The women's pole vaulters will be in action at 3:00pm while the men's high jumpers, Nick Canton and Nick Giancanna will begin at 2:00pm. The men's and women's 4X400 meter relay teams will close out the weekend for the Jayhawks at 6:30pm and 6:45. The awards ceremony will follow at 7:15pm.

Action Underway At 2011 Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships Feb 25, 2011

Sophomore Rebecca Neville kicked off the weekend for the Kansas at the 2011 Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships in the women's pentathlon on Friday morning. In the first event, the 60 meter hurdles, Neville tied a personal best with a time of 8.80 and finished with the fourth fastest time, earning her 952 points toward her overall pentathlon score. Neville then worked her way to an 11th place finish in the high jump. She cleared a top height of 1.58m (5-2.25ft.), which gave her a total of 1,646 points thru two events. Neville will compete in three more events this afternoon, the shot put at 2:00pm, the long jump at 3:15pm, and will finish the pentathlon at 4:30pm in the 800 meters.

When you're 6-8 and 320 pounds, football is the first sport that comes to mind.However, the freshman's size and strength has led him to success in a different athletic arena. The KU women's cross country team earned its best finish in 15 years at the league championship meet, as the Jayhawks captured fifth place overall at the 2009 Big 12 Cross Country Championships in Columbia, Mo.
