No. 3 Florida Men Make Big Jump in DI Rankings, Kansas Women Steady at No. 1

NEW ORLEANS – After a strong weekend at its home Pepsi Florida Relays, the defending champion Florida men have sprinted their way into the race for the No. 1 ranking in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division I National Team Computer Rankings released Tuesday, while the Kansas women remained at No. 1.

Last week it was indoor champion Arkansas gaining on No. 1 Texas A&M; this week it’s defending outdoor champ Florida. On the women’s side Kansas continues to widen the gap between itself and indoor champ Oregon.

Preseason national team rankings are calculated using data from previous seasons as a base of evaluation. Marks gained in the early part of this season will supersede previous-year marks if they are superior. Read more about the process here. The “event rankings” referenced in this article include this season’s marks in addition to returners’ marks from 2012.

Florida Men In the Hunt for No. 1

Behind five performances from the Florida Relays within the top 15 of their respective event rankings — which for one more week will take into account the top 2012 performances of returning student-athletes — the Gators jumped 52.9 net points to a team total of 296.43, just 10 points behind No. 2 Arkansas and fewer than 40 points behind top-ranked Texas A&M. Both sophomore Dedric Dukes and junior Sean Obinwa recorded 2013 collegiate-leading marks; Dukes at 200 meters in 20.38w and Obinwa at 800 in 1:47.66.

At No. 1 Texas A&M made moderate gains despite falling to No. 4 Oregon at the Oregon Pepsi Team Invitational, 194.5-180.5. Senior Henry Lelei is the top-ranked steeplechaser in the country after his 8:32.94 performance at historic Hayward Field, which added 3.88 net points to the Aggies’ team score for a total of 332.05.

Indoor champion Arkansas did not post any individual or relay performances this weekend that improved upon their existing marks from this year or last year’s top marks, resulting in a 9.41 net point drop to 306.43.

Even after taking down top-ranked Texas A&M this weekend in Eugene, the Oregon Ducks slipped 7.8 net points to 212.96. Texas rounded out the top five with 209.31 team points after a 7.58 net point drop.

Kansas Women hold steady at No. 1

The Jayhawk women are flying steady at No. 1 with a slight 4.77 net point gain, bringing their top-ranked team score to 334.70. A pair of top-10-ranked field event student-athletes contributed to the improvement with their performances at the Sun Angel Classic in junior pole vaulter Natalia Bartnovskaya and junior thrower Jessica Maroszek. Bartnovskaya moved up to No. 4 in the event rankings — which for the purposes of the rankings take into account the top 2012 marks of returning student-athletes — with a 14-5½ (4.41m), while Maroszek improved to No. 8 in the discus with a mark of 182-5 (55.60m).

No. 2 Oregon, which finished runner-up at its home Oregon Pepsi Invitational to No. 3 Texas A&M, 201-181, fell 8.42 net points to 282.55. Texas A&M overcame the Ducks in competition this past weekend, and came close to duplicating the feat in the rankings, sitting at 279.84 team points after just a 0.62 net loss.

No. 4 Florida climbed upward in the rankings with a 8.54 net gain to 258.05, behind freshman javelin thrower Marija Vucenovic moving into the top spot in the event rankings with a mark of 181-10 (55.43m). Senior hurdler Ugonna Ndu also contributed with the 17th-best 400 hurdles time in the event rankings at 57.44 and the 18th-fastest 100 hurdles performance at 13.20.

Following dual-meet victories over both then-No. 15 UCLA and TCU this weekend, LSU jumped two spots to No. 5 with a 32.91 net point gain for a 257.99 team total. Junior Natoya Goule’s top-ranked 2:01.18 was the biggest factor in the Tigers’ boost in the rankings.
