There may not have been a whole lot of suspense, but Olathe North senior Dana Baker broke the Kansas state record in the girls javelin Friday with her third throw of the preliminary round.


Baker's third throw measured 163-2, just about a foot better than the state record of 162-5 set in 2015 by Maize's Keiryn Swenson. She then stretched the record even further with a throw of 168-8 on her first throw of the finals, which turned out to be the winning throw of the competition.


Also on the track Friday morning, Wichita Southeast's Christal Mosley broke a 38-year-old record when she won her preliminary heat of the class 6A girls 400 in 54.26. Mosley, who will run for Barton County Community College next year, is the defending state champion in the event. The previous record of 54.40 was set in 1980 by Jocelyn Bentley of Highland Park.
