A race with a field full of talented runners, the winner of the race would come out to be a bit of a surprise. #1-Ranked Jaybe Shufelberger, a senior out of Washburn Rural, would be outran by freshman Katie Schwartzkopf out of Mill Valley for the state championship. It was the first race Shufelberger had lost the whole season, but she would rebound impressively with her individual NXN qualifying finish at the Nike Heartland Regional. Undoubtedly, Kansas cross country will definitely see more of Schwartzkopf in the next few years.
