Recap: Kansas Outdoor Track and Field Week 7

Highlights of Week 7

Read below about some excited events in the week leading up to League meets.

Sprints

Girls

     Hanna Pellant came out of the Salina Central Invitational victorious in both the prelims and final, recording the second-fastest time in the state this season. The junior ran an outstanding PR in the 100m dash, crossing the line with a time of 11.72. Last season, she clinched a podium finish at the 6A State Championships, securing third place with a time of 12.14. This season, she appears poised for another top-three performance at the State Championships. 

Boys

     Nate Sims of Ottawa High School made a remarkable leap in the 200m dash to run the third-fastest time in the state this season with a 21.56 at the Shawnee Mission North Relays. Prior to this race, Sims had never dipped under 22 seconds in this event. As of week 7, Nate Sims leads Class 4A. 

Hurdles

Girls

     

Adryana Shelby continues to demonstrate her talents this season through week 7running the second-fastest 100mh time in state history. Her impressive performance of 13.66 at the Goddard High School Invitational indicates that she is in peak form as we transition into championship season. 

     Aurora Wessel, another dominant figure in the hurdle events this year delivered an outstanding performance in the 100mh. She clocked in a 13.94 at the Shawnee Mission North Relays, placing her sixth all-time in Kansas history. 

Boys

     Joey Taylor came out with the win in the 300mh at the Shawnee Mission North Relays and secured second place in the 100mh. As of week 7, Taylor leads the state with his 38.75 in the 300mh. With experience qualifying for the state meet in the past two seasons, Taylor is one to watch as we approach the state meet. 

Distance

Girls

    Ryin Miller built upon her already historic sophomore season at the Topeka-Joe Schrag City Meet. Miller broke the 4:50 barrier in the 1600m for the first time, setting a new PR of 4:46.90, which elevates her to the fourth-fastest time in state history. Additionally, she secured a remarkable win in the 800m with a time of 2:10.62.

Boys

  Parker Walion delivered another outstanding performance in the 1600m at the Shawnee Mission North Relays. Earlier this season, Walion clocked in an electrifying 4:10.70, which remains the fastest 1600m time in the state this season. In week 7, he raced his second 1600m race of the year with a time of 4:12.73 for the win. 

    The Shawnee Mission North Relays featured another exciting distance race, the 3200m. Winning the race was junior, Max Larson with a nice PR of 9:08.22. Larson now holds the top spot across Class 6A after this outstanding performance. 


    Following closely behind was Samuel Ferguson of Wichita Trinity Academy, clocking in a 9:10.17. This marks a considerable improvement from last year's outdoor season, where he ran 9:20 twice, once at the Lawrence Free State Barrier Breakers Invite and once at the 3A State Championship. 


Relays

Girls

    Olathe West once again showcased their strength in relays by setting a new Shawnee Mission North Relays meet record with a time of 3:57.04 in the 4x400m. This performance also marks their best time of the season, placing them second statewide this year. Congratulations to Liz Browning, Kate Miller, Jasmine Stiede, and Bree Newport. 

    At week 7's Shawnee Mission North Relays Olathe West also showcased their strength in the 4x800m, finishing in an outstanding time of 9:02.69. The squad, consisting of Kate Miller, Kalyn Willingham, Liz Browning, and Bree Newport, surpassed their own state record with this performance! 

Boys

    Desoto High School set the 4x800m meet record at Shawnee Mission North with a time of 7:48.89. This race places the squad consisting of Connor Jacober, Vance Krudwig, Harrison Purkey, and Luke Swarts, fourth in Kansas History. Desoto High School appears strong heading into championship season; in Class 5A, they hold a twelve-second lead over Bishop Carroll Catholic High School, who rank second. 

Field Events

Girls

    Lily Brown leads the state with a mark of 40-1 in the triple jump from week seven's Chanute-Thad Clements Invitational. Not only does this rank her at the top in the state, but it also positions her ninth all-time in Kansas and currently fourteenth in the nation. Brown excels in various events; this outdoor season, she has competed in the triple jump, long jump, high jump, 300mh, 100mh, 400m, 200m, and 100m. 

    Breanne Peters and Shellamae Farmer both cleared an outstanding mark of 12-6 in week seven, tying them for thirteenth place in state history. At the Hesston Varsity Invitational, Breanne Peters secured her fifth pole vault win of the season. Shellamae Farmer of Hoisington High School maintained her undefeated streak in pole vault at the Southeast of Saline High School Invitational.                                                                                               

Boys

    Freshman Cooper Ohnmacht jumped 46-5.5 at the Salina Central Invitational, marking him second in Class 5A for triple jump this season. Despite being just a freshman, Ohnmacht has made significant strides, currently ranking third among freshmen nationwide.
