KC Meet of the Week Recap: DeSoto Invite

On Friday night, De Soto hosted the KC Metro's premier meet of week 6 in their home invitational. The Wildcats brought in 14 schools ranging from 2A to 5A to join them in a highly-competitive meet with numerous elite performances.

In the team scores, Piper's girls came out on top, scoring 117. DeSoto and Eudora tied for second with 104. On the boys side, Louisburg pulled away from the field with 142 points, defeating second-place Eudora by 25.

Ella Capling from DeSoto continues to impress in the triple jump, winning her 4th competition of the year in 36-11. She also claimed silver in the long jump. On the boys side, Basehor-Linwood's Brant Wilson soared over 23 feet again, this time at 23-6.5 to win. This week at SM North, he'll face off against Leavenworth's Isaac Ativie and Olathe North's Josh Parrish for metro bragging rights.

Both discus competitions were extremely close. The boys was separated by just two inches, with Louisburg's Nathan Vincent throwing 139-5 to Brendan O'Connor's mark of 139-3 for Baldwin. Similarly, the Brianna Hampton of Basehor-Linwood had the same margin of victory over Bonner Springs' McKenzie Campbell, 106-2 to 106-0.

On the track, Heritage Christian's Rachel Van Gorp was the champion in the long jump and 200m, along with placing 2nd in the 100m to DeSoto's Kamdyn Wedel. The metro's small private schools performed quite well in the sprints, with Maranatha's Cooper Wilcox winning the 400 and also placing 3rd in the 200.

Moving up to the distance events, Tonganoxie's Eli Gilmore pulled off a successful double-win in the 1600 and 800, winning in 4:21 (a PR) and 1:55. Similarly, Hanna Keltner won both on the girls' side for Eudora, running 5:14 (a PR) and 2:23. She then handed it off to Sydney Owens, who was second in the 1600 (with a PR) and winner in the 3200.

Basehor-Linwood had a good showing in the relays, winning the boys' 4x400 and both 4x800s. Louisburg swept the 4x100s, but Piper's girls gave them a heck of a run. The Pirates finished just 0.01 behind, 50.79 to 50.80. Piper would come back later, though, winning the girls' 4x400 and securing their team title.
