KC Meet of the Week: Wyandotte County Championship

Most of the major meets in the KC Metro are now behind us. Wow, the season sure has flown by, hasn't it? This week, several teams take an off week leading into the League-Regional-State trifecta to end the season, opening the door for some unsung heroes to shine. This week, we decided to take the KC Meet of the Week back to WyCo Park for the Wyandotte County Invitational. The WyCo schools don't get a lot of love in XC, but this meet highlights them well, and is timed perfectly to be the best meet in town for the week!

Meet Information

Location: Wyandotte County Park (North 126th Street & State Ave, Bonner Springs, KS)
Schedule: Meet begins at 4:00PM. Four 5K events will be run: Girls & Boys Varsity and JV events.

Preview & Analysis

Many previous Wyandotte County Championship meets have not had results submitted, so this could be a tough one to predict. Nonetheless, I'll try to preview it anyway! The unpredictability of sports is what makes it all exciting.

The top entry in the girls' race is Washington's K'lynn Lawrence. Her PR came from 5A Regionals last year, and won the 2022 Wyandotte Invitational (different meet, similar name) against similar competition to what she'll see this week. Her primary challenger looks strong, though. Seraphim Peel of Bonner Springs had her 2nd fastest race ever last week at the Maple Leaf Classic, and placed 3rd at Ottawa the week prior.

Team-wise, this is a pretty small meet. With less than 50 competitors, the scores will all be low. Bonner Springs has the best shot at winning, but Sumner Academy brings the biggest roster, which could play a factor. J.C. Harmon and Wyandotte both also bring scoring teams.

For the boys, this could be the Sumner Academy show. They bring in the top-3 entry times, led by Uziel Yepez-Espinoza, Anthony Mendez, and Lucas Rietema. Bonner Springs may be able to find a way to pull off a win, and J.C. Harmon could be a wild card with 5 athletes entered without seed times. At the moment, though, the scales tip in favor of the Sabres.
