4A Girls
Baldwin erased any questions about who the best 4A girls' team is with their great performance today -- three in the top fifteen and the other two in the top 26 gave them a 21-point victory (45-66) over new 4A threat Andover Central. Baldwin took advantage of Andover Central's huge gap between #4 and #5; Central put their great top four in the top fourteen, but lacked the depth to take the title, as their fifth runner was 55th. Baldwin did not have much room for error, either, only having any depth through the top six -- but got the job done and won their first title since 2011. The defending champions from Trinity Academy in Wichita took third, barely outscoring Atchison 102-103. Atchison was winning through four but Trinity had the better #5 by nine points.
Individually, KS#1 Cailie Logue took a minute, 13 second victory in winning her third 4A title in as many years with a time of 18:08. That was easily the fastest time on the Wamego course on Saturday, though it was only second-fastest across all six classes (#2 Born of SMNW ran 17:58 at Rim Rock). Senior Cassidy Westhoff (ranked #5) of Fort Scott took second with a time of 19:21 in running the second-fastest time of the day at Wamego; she became a three-time top seven finisher, having finished seventh as a sophomore and fifth last year as a junior. Senior Sarah Jaloma of Atchison finished third to beat out Santa Fe Trail sophomore Hannah Honeyman 19:34-19:35 -- and in the process, earned her second-straight third place finish and third top-five finish of her XC career. Addie Dick of Baldwin (6th, 19:40) and Jolie Howland of El Dorado (7th, 19:57) were the only other runners under in the race under 20:00.
