Another April week down and we are one more closer to Regionals. It was a much quieter week in terms of big meets compared to last week, but several of the state's top athletes still put together stellar marks.
As we get further into the season, we are still looking for athletes who have not been featured as nominees yet, which is difficult when so many Kansans are putting together the top marks in their respective events week in and week out. So here are five nominees from the week of 4/21-4/26.
--
Shout out to last week's winner: Shawnee Mission East's Paige Stanfield! Stanfield has burst onto the scene with three javelin marks over 120 feet in her first season in Kansas. She upped the ante on Friday, chucking the javelin 141-6 at the Kansas Relays and finishing second. She will move on to the final round of voting during the week of the State Championships when we crown our Performance of the Year! --
Past Winners:
--
Hanna Pellant - Manhattan - Pellant owned the top 100 meter performance of the week, posting an 11.96 at the
Legacy Leitel Invite. It's a season best for the senior as she trends toward the 11.59 mark that won her the 6A State title last year.
--
Charlotte Caldwell - Mill Valley - Caldwell crossed the border and won the highly competitive
Ken Peek Invitational on Friday, running her second straight sub-5:00 mile. Her 4:59.15 was 2 seconds off her time from the Kansas Relays, but still good enough for the top spot among milers this past week.
--
ThayLee Powers - Garden City - Powers is enjoying a breakout April in the 300m Hurdles as Tuesday's
Andover Invitational marks her third time under 46.4 this season after finishing the 2024 season at 48.78. The sophomore ran 45.06 for the win. She also snagged her first career 5-0 clearance in the High Jump.
--
--
Bethany Hicklin - Salina South - Hicklin had two impressive Pole Vault performances last week, clearing 11-6 twice for wins at the Andover Invitational and
Buhler Invitational. Her 11-7 clearance at Andover is currently tied for third in the entire State. She also set a personal best in the Long Jump on Tuesday, hitting 15-7.5 for the win.
