2023 KSHSAA 6A State Cross Country Preview

There may not be another runner in Kansas as exciting and interesting as Micah Blomker. We all know the dude can run, but when you look at his journey to this point, it looks like he's lived three different careers.

First, he was the star freshman at Bishop Miege, competing at state with what turned out to be 4 other state XC champions. Tanner Newkirk was the one to outkick them all, leaving Blomker hungry. Then he was the superstar, with high expectations and backing them up with a 6A title and a 5th place finish at NXR. Then, he was dethroned. No state title as a junior, and after only racing only a handful of times on the track. Normally, that is the sign of the beginning of the end. Micah, however, found his way through, and now stands once again as the face of 6A. He even won his first league title this year.

There's a saying that goes: "You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villan." Well, Micah has survived long enough to come all the way back around to being the hero again.

The new Micah Blomker still has company, though. Brock Olsen (Blue Valley West) pushed him to the brink last weekend, finishing just half a second back. Max Larson wasn't out of it until late, either. Parker Walion, the champion at the Shawnee Mission Northwest Regional has a chance, but has already lost to Blomker this season. The same can be said of Wichita East Regional champ Blake Wohler (Free State). Lucas Holdren (Manhattan) is another one to watch, but has also fallen at the hands of Wohler & Olsen.

In the team standings. It's close. It's really close. The four regional championship teams are obviously in the mix: Free State, Gardner-Edgerton, Shawnee Mission North, and Garden City. Olathe East was just one point behind Gardner-Edgerton last weekend, and Shawnee Mission South was just a point away from beating Shawnee Mission North.

You can try to argue a case for each of these teams all day long, but the best thing to do is probably just sit back and watch, 'cause this one is going to be a blast.
