Kansas' track and field athletes continued to riddle the
state-best lists with outstanding performances, while a handful went way beyond
that by putting their names up high on the national lists.
Tops among those was Olathe North junior Dana Baker, who
surged to No. 1 on the U.S. MileSplit performance list with a throw of 159-4 to
win the javelin at the Olathe East Invitational. Baker was the state champion
in the event last year. Her win this weekend was a career-best throw and puts
her within just a few feet of the state record of 162-5 set by Maize's Keiryn
Swenson two years ago.
Manhattan freshman javelin thrower Sam Hankins got into the
act, too. He increased his state-leading mark to 185-0 to win the Lansing
Invitational, and is the No. 1 freshman in the United States right now. He's
also No. 24 overall on the U.S. Milesplit listings.
