This past Thursday Valley Center's Morgan Wedekind ran to victory at the Buhler Invitational running a time of 15:18.  She beat the field by thirty seconds while helping her team score only 23 points.  For this she was selected as the Kansas Milesplit Runner of the Week.  Morgan started her season off with a 16:10 at her home meet.  After a strong showing at Buhler she will run at the Rim Rock XC Classic where she will attempt to defend her title in the Crimson Division.  Wedekind was the second place finisher last year in the 5A State XC Championships only behind Kaelyn Balch of Bishop Carroll.  She currently sits at #4 on the Kansas Milesplit Power Rankings.  We caught up with the Valley Center senior to talk about her meet and whats ahead for her next.

Kansas Milesplit : What was the plan for the race on Thursday? How did the race play out?

Morgan Wedekind: I didn't really have a race plan on Thursday because my team didn't know a whole lot about the new course at Buhler. It was kinda rainy, windy, and a little cold so my coach just told us to go out and work hard but have fun. The course was kinda hilly so I ran easy up the hills and harder down the hills.

KM: Your team had a fantastic meet scoring only 26 points. How is the team looking this year?

MW: I am excited about what the team can do this year. So far we have done really well at all of our meets. We have been working really hard in practice so we can continue to get better as a team.

KM: I see that you are listed to run in the crimson division again this weekend at KU. You won this race last year. Are you glad to be in the crimson or would you rather be in the gold race?

MW: I don't mind being in the crimson race. The gold race does have a lot more competition, but the crimson division still has a lot of talented girls running in it. I also want to be able to help my team out with points in the crimson race because I feel like we have the potential to do well.

KM: Its now your senior year, what are your goals for your last season of cross country?

MW: I want to be a better runner than I was all of my previous years of running and I want to run a faster time at state this year.

KM: Thanks and best of luck this weekend at Rim Rock.
