Jamie Kempfer MO Record/US#5-10:23!-3200m! US#184:55-1600-2014 F

Festus High School senior Jamie Kempfer talks about her amazing performance at the Festus Early Bird Track & Field Invitational, Saturday, March 29, 2014 in Festus, Missouri. Kempfer, a Mizzou signee who earned All-American honors with her 19th place finish at the 2013 Nike Cross Nationals meet, set a personal best with a 4:55 in the 1600 meters behind Hannah Long and Taylor Werner, putting her 18th on the national high school performance list this season. Then three and a-half hours later, Kempfer made history. Kempfer beat a loaded field on her way to winning the 3200 meters in 10:23.98, the fastest time ever for a Missouri High School female, and currently fifth on the U.S. high school girls performance list this season. Kempfer bettered Parkway Central junior Emily Sisson's record of 10:24.12 at the 2009 state meet, by just 14/100ths of a second. Kempfer's performance also better's Hazelwood Central's Megan Thompson's 10:25.95 state meet time in 1990. Kempfer also passed, the two ladies the edged her in the 1600 Saturday. Kempfer edged Taylor Werner's 10:25.88 and Hannah Long's 10:27.49 times put up on the same track at the Festus Tiger Town meet just less than a year ago. Kempfer's time also moved her past Nerinx Hall's Colleen Quigley's 10:27 from the 2011 state meet. Festus coaches Bryant Wright and John Crites were beaming afterward, and later Crites would say it wasn't just how she ran that made him proud of her, but that her first actions after finishing were to head back down the track infield to cheer on teammate Claire Darnell to finish strong, before celebrating or even finding out how fast she had just run. The race was filled with Missouri Class 3 and 4 All-Staters and some of the state's very best. Kempfer was the first of four ladies to break the 11-minute barrier, while a fifth came in at 11:03, making it one of, if not the best girls' regular season 3200 meter race ever in Missouri, much less one before the start of April. Fellow NXN national qualifier Cor Jesu senior and Indiana signee Jill Whitman was second in 10:51, while Tulsa signee and Clinton senior Nicole Lee was third in 10:55. Mia Jerman was fourth, giving Ste. Genevieve two sophomores who have now broken the 11-minute mark. Nerinx junior Sophia Racette had a personal best, finishing in 11:03.
