In Their Own Words: Baker Twins

We are kicking off another new series.  We will feature some of the top athletes in Kansas as they blog about their experiences from week to week.  We start with the Baker twins, a pair of seniors from Lansing High School who have started their season with some great races.

Malika Baker:

Hello Kansas Runners! This is Malika Baker and I am a senior at Lansing High School. I have been running competitively since the seventh grade and have a twin sister who has been running for the same amount of time. I began running cross country my sophomore year in high school and have developed a passion for it ever since then. The Lansing High School cross country team has been progressively improving and I am proud to be a part of it. Two weekends ago my team and I ran at the Rim Rock Farms course. I have run there a total of four times before so I am pretty familiar with it. To prepare for the race, my team and I did a lot of hill work and it really paid off! I had a great race, placing fourth in the Crimson division, and gained a course personal record.

Nashia Baker:

Hello, everyone! I am Nashia Baker and I am a senior varsity runner from Lansing High School.  I also have a twin sister, Malika Baker, who is a senior varsity runner on the team as well. We both have been running competitvely since the seventh grade and began running cross country our sophomore year. Once I began running cross country, I gained more excitement for running. Two weekends ago, my team and I ran at the Rim Rock course. I have run the Rim Rock course many times in the past and I was excited to run it again this year. I trained for the course by doing more hill workouts this year than usual. I placed third in the Crimson division out of about 235 runners. I am happy with how I ran and I am looking forward to the rest of the season!
