First in a series. The dictionary defines “archetype” as “a perfect example or model of something.” The Kansas state motto is “Ad astra per aspera,” which means “to the stars through difficulties.” This series will focus on native Kansan track and cross-country athletes who are archetypes of that state motto, people and athletes who overcame remarkable difficulties to achieve amazing things. Some will be famous, others not so much, but they will all embody the traits that allowed them to reach the stars through difficulties.

Kansas track & field senior horizontal jumper Andrea Geubelle was named the recipient of this year's Outstanding Woman Student in Athletics award, it was announced Tuesday night by the University of Kansas. Geubelle was recognized at the annual Women's Recognition Program, which honors outstanding women in the KU community and is the second-consecutive track & field athlete to earn the honor as Rebeka Stowe received the award last year.

Tyler Yunk was a part of something special at Belvidere North. During his four years, the Blue Thunder won three state cross country championships and finished as the 2A runner-up in 2012. Yunk finished 29th, the second highest finisher behind Garrett Lee who recently committed to the University of Illinois. Yunk visited the Illini along with fellow midwest schools, Iowa, Indiana, and Kansas. He says he knew the Jayhawks were the right fit from the beginning.

Sherre-Khan (Blackmon) Jones, a Houston, Texas native, ran track for the Jayhawks from 1998-2001. She currently holds the sixth fastest time for the indoor 600 yards. Also during her time here at Kansas, she met Marcellus Jones III in her Western Civilization class and the two married in 2004. They now live in Eudora, Kan., and have a one-year-old daughter, Maison. The couple is awaiting the arrival of another baby girl in February.

The meet, which will take place inside the Reno Livestock Events Center, will play host to hundreds of high school, collegiate and professional pole vaulters from across the nation.

Construction of Kansas Athletics' brand-new, state-of-the-art track and field, soccer and softball facilities can begin soon, now that the City Commission of Lawrence has approved the proposed site for this use. The site, which has been named Rock Chalk Park, is near the intersection of 6th Street and George Williams Way, just east of K-10.

Track and Field Officials Hall of Fame Friday after serving as one of the most well-known and well-respected track & field officials in the U.S. from 1968-2011. Rankin served as the head starter for two Olympic Games, three U.S. Olympic Trials and 10 NCAA National Championship meets throughout his 43-year career.

Sophomore Reid Buchanan collected a 74th-place finish and led the Kansas men's cross country team to a 20th-place finish at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational Friday afternoon. Senior Kathleen Thompson was the top Jayhawk finisher on the women's side and led the group to finish 47th. Both the men's and women's races featured over 300 runners and many of the top-ranked teams in the nation.
Living in Eldama, Kenya until he was 18, Benson Chesang decided to travel across the ocean to join the KU cross country and track & field teams and became a well-known distance runner in Kansas. While competing for KU from 2003-07, Chesang was KU's top runner his freshman and sophomore seasons. In 2004 he won the Big 12 Cross Country Championship and was named an All-Big 12 runner. In addition, he was also the only Kansas runner to qualify for the NCAA Championships that season. Just a year later, Chesang claimed the league title for the second consecutive season. Today, he can still be found in Lawrence, volunteering with the Jayhawk cross country and track & field teams while still competing in running events across the state and nation.

Kansas Track & Field assistant coach Wayne Pate was named the women's assistant coach of the year Thursday as was announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Former Kansas track & field great, Glenn Cunningham, will be inducted into the National Distance Running Hall of Fame it was announced last week. Cunningham, who will be honored in Utica, N.Y. in July, was a two-time national champion for the Jayhawks during his four-year Kansas career from 1931-34. He also competed in two Olympic Games, snagging silver in the 1,500 meters at the 1936 Games in Berlin.

Heylman is in rare company for many reasons. The Spokane, Wash. native graduated from Kansas in just six semesters as a part of the unique Navy V-12 program in the mid-1940s. Following his military career, the architectural engineering graduate went onto found Heylman Martin Architects in Spokane as well as keep up his recreational running career. The now 88-year old still runs five miles almost every day and had a successful appearance at the 2005 World Masters Games in Edmonton, where he finished in fourth place in the 100-meter dash.
Kansas freshman Lindsay Vollmer sits in second place of the heptathlon with 3,304 points following the first day of competition in the 85th annual Kansas Relays. Teammate Amanda Caines is performing in her first collegiate heptathlon and is currently in eighth place. The sophomore has 2,533 total points heading into the second day of competition.

It is a busy weekend across the country for Division I track and field programs, as teams gear up for conference championship action. The University of Kansas Jayhawks, who are competing in one of the fiercest leagues in the NCAA, will head to College Station, Texas for the 2012 Big 12 Indoor Championships. Nine of the nation's top 25 teams will be featured between the men's and women's sides, including the seventh-ranked KU women's squad. The Jayhawks have 26 men and 25 women in tow for an exciting weekend at the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium.
Another welcome addition to the team is middle-distance runner Rhavean King from Memphis, Tenn. With three senior athletes graduating this year, there is certainly room for King to thrive during her first year on the team. The University of Kansas' women's 4x400-meter relay team ran to an automatic spot in the NCAA Indoor Championships Saturday afternoon at the Tyson Invitational inside the Randal Tyson Track Facility. Denesha Morris, Paris Daniels, Diamond Dixon and Taylor Washington passed the baton around in 3:33.65, recording the fourth-fastest time in the NCAA this year and breaking the indoor school record in the event.

For the third and final time of the 2011-12 indoor track and field season, the Kansas Jayhawks will return from a two-week hiatus to host a meet in the newly renovated Anschutz Pavilion. Kansas track and field will renew the Border Showdown this Friday when the men's and women's teams travel to Columbia, Mo., for the Kansas vs. Missouri Dual Meet held in the Tigers' Hernes Center Fieldhouse. The Jayhawks earned the victory last season while Missouri came out on top in 2009 and 2010.

Robert L. "Bob" Smith, 79, of Leawood, KS passed away December 22, 2011. Born September 24, 1932, he was a lifelong resident of the Kansas City Area, except for his early childhood and early teen years in Southern California. After the death of his parents, he left California and came to Kansas City to live with his sister.
Former Kansas track and field coaching legend Bob Timmons was inducted into the USA Track and Field Hall of Fame Saturday night at the Jesse Owens Hall of Fame Banquet in St. Louis. Timmons coached at Kansas from 1966-88 and led the Jayhawks to 31 league titles as well as four national championships.

There was something missing though. No one from his school had shown up. None of his peers were there to watch or cheer him on. Kansas' men's and women's cross country teams reported to campus Tuesday to officially kick off the 2011 season. The Jayhawks will begin with team meetings in the morning and afternoon and will then begin training sessions on Wednesday morning. The teams will have 16 days of practice before the first meet of the season on September 3, the Bob Timmons Classic held at KU's home course, Rim Rock Farm.

Kansas sophomore Josh Baden turned in a personal best performance in taking second place in the 5,000 meters to lead KU on the second day of action at the 84th annual Kansas Relays. Baden crossed the finish line in 14:40.73, trimming 10 seconds off his previous career-best time in the event.
This is what I love to do, but I haven't been competing, so it is kind of like I have taken a step back. Competition-wise, if there is a meet that I can run in, I will almost certainly be there. I just show up and I do my thing, so that is basically where I am at right now. This is what I love doing, and when you love what you do, you will never feel like you are working a day for the rest of your life. Running never feels like a job for me. I'm building back my confidence.

It was a solid effort by the KU track team on Saturday afternoon at the ISU NCAA Qualifier in Ames, Iowa. Six Jayhawks set personal bests and the men's 4X400 meter relay team moved up in the KU record books in an attempt to qualify for next weekend's NCAA Indoor Championships in College Station, Texas.
The KU women's 4X400 meter relay team broke the school record in the event Saturday afternoon at the Alex Wilson Last Chance Meet in South Bend, Ind. Senior Kendra Bradley, Freshman Diamond Dixon, Sophomore Denesha Morris, and Junior Shayla Wilson crossed the finish line in 3:35.65 which was .21 of a second faster than the previous mark set by Manning, Butler, Stowers, and Anderson during the 2008 season. On Saturday, the women finished fourth and were just 1.65 seconds from qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championships next weekend in College Station, TX.
Kansas Sophomore Andrea Geubelle took first place in the women's long jump Friday afternoon at the Arkansas Last Chance Meet in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Geubelle jumped a distance of 6.18m (20-03.50ft.) on her fourth attempt. The mark was her longest of the year. Fellow sophomore Francine Simpson also had a top jump of 6.18m (20-03.50ft.) but finished second because her next best jump was shorter than Geubelle's. The mark was Simpson's second best of the season. Unfortunately, Geubelle and Simpson's jumps were just eight inches short of hitting the qualifying mark for the NCAA National Championships to be held next weekend. Sophomore Rebecca Neville and Junior Jamaica Collins also competed in the event, with Neville placing fourth on a jump of 5.73m (18-09.75ft.) and Collins placing seventh with a mark of 5.20m (17-00.75ft.), her best of the season.
Thirty-year-old Kortney Clemons is an outstanding and extremely decorated track and field athlete. He participates in the 100 meters, 200 meters and the long jump. He has earned numerous first place finishes in each event, qualified and competed against the world's best in international meets, broken the American record in the 200 meters this past January and is a member of the U.S. national team. Currently he is working toward earning a spot on the U.S. Team to compete in the 2012 Olympics to be held in London, and is doing so with the help of the Kansas track and field team. However, the most incredible thing about those accomplishments is that he's done it all on one leg.
Current Jayhawks aren't the only athletes making the news for their performances on the track. Former Jayhawk distance runner Paul Hefferon recently qualified for the 2012 Olympic trials in the half marathon.
The men's and women's track teams began the day with 42 members preparing to compete in Big 12 finals action. Sophomore Mason Finely is looking to defend his Big 12 title in the shot put while Andrea Guebelle is looking to bring home KU's second Big 12 championship in the women's triple jump. Freshman Diamond Dixon will be hoping to carry over her record-setting performance in the 400 meters last night, to the finals today at 4:05pm. Kyle Clemons will follow Dixon in the men's 400 meter finals at 4:15. Last night in the prelims, Clemons ran the second fastest 400 meters in school history. The women's pole vaulters will be in action at 3:00pm while the men's high jumpers, Nick Canton and Nick Giancanna will begin at 2:00pm. Sophomore Rebecca Neville kicked off the weekend for the Kansas at the 2011 Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships in the women's pentathlon on Friday morning. In the first event, the 60 meter hurdles, Neville tied a personal best with a time of 8.80 and finished with the fourth fastest time, earning her 952 points toward her overall pentathlon score. Neville then worked her way to an 11th place finish in the high jump. She cleared a top height of 1.58m (5-2.25ft.), which gave her a total of 1,646 points thru two events. Neville will compete in three more events this afternoon, the shot put at 2:00pm, the long jump at 3:15pm, and will finish the pentathlon at 4:30pm in the 800 meters.
KU sprinter Denesha Morris has had to adjust to several cultural, geographical, and social changes since moving to Lawrence from Manchester, Jamaica a year and a half ago. However, one big difference has been more difficult to adjust to than the others.

Led by junior Amanda Miller, the Kansas track team enjoyed a 1-2-3 sweep of the women's 3,000 meter run Thursday at the 83rd Annual Kansas Relays. Miller led a pack of five Jayhawks in the race, finishing first in a career-best time of 9:47.41, which currently ranks 21st in the nation.

With a mammoth throw of 64.57m (211-10 ft.) Thursday at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, Kansas sophomore Alena Krechyk now owns the top collegiate mark in the nation in the women's hammer throw. Keith Hayes earned a spot in Friday's 110-meter hurdles semi-finals, and Nickesha Anderson advanced to the semis in the 200 meters before falling .005 seconds short of a berth in the finals to lead Kansas on day two of the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships Thursday at John McDonnell Field.
On the first day of the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Kansas senior Zlata Tarasova advanced to the finals of the women's hammer throw by posting a mark of 57.34 meters (188-01 feet) on her first attempt Wednesday at John McDonnell Field. Tarasova finished fourth in the first flight of preliminaries and 11th overall to move on to the finals.
Four Jayhawks are set to compete at the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., June 10-13. Keith Hayes (110-meter hurdles), Lauren Bonds (1,500 meters) and Zlata Tarasova (hammer throw) qualified automatically at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships in Norman, Okla., while Nickesha Anderson (200 meters) received an at-large bid.
Kansas track & field junior Lauren Bonds has been named a CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First Team honoree, it was announced Thursday. The distinction is given to those who excel in the classroom and in their respective athletic events.
Egor Agafonov, Zlata Tarasova and Kate Sultanova – two weight throwers and a pole vaulter – will compete at the 2008 New Balance Collegiate Invitational indoor track meet at the Armory in New York Feb. 8-9.
