NYSPHSAA Details Six Possible Options For 2021 Sports Season

Could Fall Track be a real thing?

Depending what the School Year looks like, it is only one of six potential scenarios discussed by the NYSPHSAA COVID-19 Task Force this past Tuesday. NYSPHSAA Executive Director Robert Zayas stressed on Twitter that these proposals only "POTENTIALLY" address the various scenarios, and that "NOTHING" has been determined. They are currently waiting on guidance from the New York State Education Department, as well as Governor Cuomo.

That relationship could be felt at the beginning of this week. As New York State was headed into Phase 4, Cuomo's office announced that the Youth Sports exemption would not apply to New York State High School sports on Friday. The move delayed many coaches looking to get back to organized Summer practices, many after not seeing their athletes face-to-face since March 7th.

One thing has been clear: NYSPHSAA has been determined to get High School Sports Seasons back to as much a sense of normalcy as is legally possible, and responsible.

...Zayas said in a Zoom news conference Tuesday following a meeting of the association's COVID-19 task force. "It is my intention that no student have to be told what the spring sport athletes were told at the beginning of March. So it's my commitment to the association and to all student athletes and their parents that we are doing everything we can, at this point in time, to ensure that every student gets the season that they want in the upcoming school year.

"What does the season look like? How long is the season? Are there championships? That's all yet to be determined but it's my goal, at the very minimum, to give students the opportunity to participate in their sport in the upcoming school year."
