We Salute Sabrina Thomas, Kiowa County

Name: Sabrina Thomas

School: Kiowa County

Q: What does your training look like right now given the current situation?

A: Well right now I am currently in North Dakota, but I think my training now will look like just trying to stay in shape as much as possible and hope that they can figure out everything that is going on and have a chance to have a little of the season left.

Q: What are you doing to stay busy other than throwing right now?

A: Staying positive that everybody will stay healthy and recover from the virus going around. I watch a lot of Netflix and Hulu and hang out with my family/dogs. I like to lay in my bed and take naps and make sure all of my friends are doing okay.

Q: What was your most memorable throw/moment?

A: When I got to win State Track as a Sophomore in two of my events. The rush was honestly so much to handle I had no idea what to do. My first thought was my throwing coach will be gone next year and I'm glad he was there my first two years to help me achieve my goal.

Q: What was the funniest thing that happened during your throwing career?

A: It was my Sophomore year, and it was storming at one of our track meets and we all had to go inside to wait out the storm. Then we went back outside to try and finish the meet and it started storming again so we went in this tin shed outside and waited until about 2 in the morning and then they cancelled the meet. We had to go back the next day and finish the meet. Just all the things that happened in the shed I will never forget.

Q: Who would you consider your biggest competition over your four years?

A: My biggest competition was myself. Making sure that I stay focused and don't get in my head all the time. Knowing that I am capable of doing more and making sure to push myself all the time.

Q: What was your greatest accomplishment?

A: Being able to be a State Champion two years in a row, and being able to have the coaches that were given to me and the team that I am so lucky to have.

Q: If you could do it all over again what would you change about your throwing career in high school?

A: I would change seeing the best in every situation. I wouldn't take the nicest weather for granite and make sure I performed to my full potential every meet. And I would definitely drink more water!

Q: What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?

A: Getting a new coach right after my Sophomore year. Just learning to trust that he knew what he was talking about and he was only telling me how to get better as a person and a thrower. I learned to trust him throughout the season, and we became really close and he was the closest thing I had to a father during the track season.

Q: What will you miss the most?

A: Being able to go to all the meets and definitely State Track. Another big thing I will miss is all the memories I made at track meets, and getting to spend time with my team and my coaches.

Q: What advice would you give to younger athletes?

A: To make sure you never take the season for granite, and yeah you have next year to get better, but that's next year. Just to always push yourself to be better, not just as an athlete but a person and a teammate. My coach always says "There is somebody out there wanting to beat you!", and there is!

Q: What kind of an impact has your coach had on you and your team?

A: Between the get better speeches we always have, they have always pushed me personally to be better and to know that I have talent, and can go so far with this sport and can make something great of myself. They have been put through so much stress and heartbreak, but come through for us and I couldn't be more thankful for my coaches!

Q: What are your college plans?

A: I will attend Dodge City Community College the first two years to get my gen eds in Psychology and Finish my last two years at Fort Hays State University and have my degree in Psychology. Hopefully to play volleyball for DC3!

Q: Who would you like to say 'thank you' to?

A: I would like to thank all of my coaches for putting up with me for four years and never giving up on me! I would like to thank my parents and my grandparents for coming out to every meet and supporting me, even in the coldest weather. My teammates for always cheering me on and making sure that I know that they care about me and only hope for the best for me. I would also like to thank all my competitors for making me better and compete at every meet.

Q: Is there anything else you'd like to add?

A: I think just to push yourself. Make it an outlet, knowing that your coaches and your teammates will always have your back. They will become your second family whether you think that or not.

Q: Favorite Meal?

A: My favorite meal is steak with asparagus, mashed potatoes, and green beans. (with A1 sauce)

Q: If you could be any animal what would you choose? and why?

A: Lion, because they show no fear and if they want something they go for it.

Q: Your favorite superhero?

A: I would have to say my mom! She has been by my side cheering me on and pushing me to be the best athlete I can be!
