Taylor Ewert Named USATF Youth Athlete Of The Year

Last year's track and field season is long gone, but Beavercreek (OH) High School junior Taylor Ewert is still picking up awards following a record-breaking season.

The USATF named Ewert as its Youth Athlete of the Year on Wednesday after a spring season that saw the Ohio then-sophomore topple the American Junior record in the 10K race walk at the U20 Championships in Tampere, Finland, in July.

Ewert--who is currently having a banner season in cross country and grabbed her first Division I state championship in Ohio--cut nearly five minutes off the 10K junior record she set in June at the USA Championships in Indianapolis by finishing 10th in 45:57.81, becoming the sixth fastest American woman at the distance in history. Ewert's time of 49:07.52 at the USA Junior Championships also came less than 24 hours after a national title in the 2K steeple at New Balance Nationals Outdoor -- which was 500 miles away in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Ewert also broke the American Junior record in the 5K race walk in April at The Penn Relays, finishing in 22:38.16, which cut more than 22 seconds off a record that had stood since 1994.

Ewert also set an American Junior record in the 3K race walk at the Penn Relays in April with a time of 13:31.79.

Ewert also holds the high school national record in the indoor girls mile.
