Indoor PR in the HJ (6-11). It's going to be hard to move above Cooper at the #1 spot, but if Garland keeps this momentum going across his events, he could find himself at the top.
3
2 mile national champion. Top returner in the mile, 3000m, 3200m, and 2 mile. #4 returner in the 1000m. 4:01 mile PR. 2nd place at NXN.

#2 returner in the 300m behind Cooper. #4 returner in the 200m, and top 15 in the 400m. Relay member on Bullis' #2/#4 4x2 and 4x4.
5
Most talented single event athlete in the US, but is less impactful at the HS level because other elite athletes can compete at a high level in multiple individual events and relays.
6
Top 10 returner in four events (200m, 300m, 400m ,500m). VA State Champ in the 500m. Two top ten finishes at nationals last year in the 200m and 400m.

12
#1 returner in the 60H, top 20 in the 400m. 3rd in the 60H at Nationals. 400m 10th at A&M Invite, 3rd Arkansas. Could argue a higher ranking based off his outdoor progression, but remains to be seen how much of an indoor season he'll have in Texas.
13
#7 returner in the 200m. 3rd at nationals in the pentathlon. 2nd at the PA State Meet in the 60H and 200m. 11th at nationals in the 200m prelims.

15
#1 returner in the 1600m and #5 in the mile. OH State Champ, 2nd at UK Invite, 5th at Nationals. Big improvements made during the XC season.
16
#3 returner in the 300m and top 10 in the 200m. 4th at Millrose in the 55m. Opened 2018 season with a 6.39 55m PR.
17
#3 returner in the 400m. AL State Champ in the 60m & 400m. 6th in the 400m at Nationals.
18
#2 returner in the 60H and 5th at Nationals. Edwards is in a similar situation as Noah Green. He's a better athlete than #18, but he doesn't compete much indoors.
19
#6 returner in the LJ. MA State Champ in the 55m and 3rd at NE Champs. 8th in the 60m at Nationals. 4th in the LJ at NE Champs and 10th at Nationals. 4th at MA State in the HJ.
20
#2 returner in the 600m and 800m. 7th in the 800m at Nationals. Opened 2018 with 5th place in AT&T mile.
21
#2 returner in the 2 mile and #16 in the mile. 5th at Nationals in the 2 mile. Showed strong improvement in the mile outdoors. After a disappointing end to the XC season, we'll see if he comes out motivated to race more indoors.
22
#1 returner in the LJ. VA State Champ in the LJ and 55m. Opened up his 2018 season close to his LJ PR.
23
#10 returner in the 200m. 3rd in the 60m and 6th in the 200m at PA State. 5th in the Hispanic Games LJ. Opened 2018 season with back to back PRs and a 6.40 55m win at Bishop Loughlin. Kratz won the 300m in a US #1 PR 33.93.
24
#6 returner in the 400m. 2nd at the PA State Meet and 12th in Nationals prelims. Green kicked off his 2018 season with a 34.32 US #2 300m PR at the Bishop Loughlin Games.
25
Davis has had a strong start to his 2018 season. He's been setting PRs every time he steps foot on the track. He was third in the Bishop Loughlin 300m final behind Kratz and Green.
26
#3 returner in the 2 mile. 7th in the 2 mile at Nationals. Bunch of top three finishes in smaller Illinois races. One of the top ranked XC runners but could fall in the rankings depending on how much he races indoor this season.
27
#2 returner in the LJ. 2nd at OH State Champs. EE long jump champ at NBN. 23-8 would've put him top 4 in the championship event.
28
#1 returner in the 1000m and #4 in the 800m. NY State Champ in the 1K. NB Grand Prix Mile Champ, 12th Millrose Mile. 12th in the 800m at Nationals.
29
#4 returner in the 2 mile and #5 in the 3000m. 2nd in PA State Champs 3K and 8th in the 2 mile at Nationals.
30
This 2020 sprinter got off to a hot start in his first indoor season last year. He's the #8 returner in the 60m and finished 9th at Nationals. Keep an eye on him to start moving up the ranking once he starts racing in January.
31
#3 returner in the LJ. Competed well in VA all year and finished 7th at Nationals.
32
Cadena is the #4 returner in the 60m but ranked lower because he didn't race much outside of CO last indoor season. He's off to a decent start with a 6.98 60m two weeks ago.
33
Burrell really broke onto the national sprint season during the 2017 outdoor track season. To rank him higher, we'll have to see him race more indoor meets. He only ran a few small LA meets last year.
34
Godwin is in the same situation as Burrell. One of the most talented sprinters in the country, but he only competed at the David Oliver Classic last season.
35
Marche is a top 15 returner in both the 60m and 200m. He also finished top 5 in both events at the PA state meet.
36
Miller is the #1 returner in the 55m and top 15 in the 200m. He was 3rd at the NY State Champs in the 55m last year and 6th at Millrose.
37
Top 5 returner in both the 400m and 500m, but Fuller only competed twice last year. He'll have to race to move up against athletes with loaded indoor schedules.
38
Valentine doesn't race often indoors but you can't argue the results. His 6.77 from December 2016 held up as the fastest returning time for the season.
39
I've been really impressed with what Kris Moore has done with his first meets of the season. He stormed through the early Crossplex meets to post the fastest 400m in December history (47.89). He won't race again until January, but has plenty of potential to rise if he keeps dropping time.
40
I didn't have Okheme or Kris Moore in my first pass at the MileSplit50, but their early 2018 times earned them a spot. Okheme has been right on the heels of Kris Moore through their 400m races in Birmingham. Okheme is currently US #2 in the 400m with his 48.02. The mark also puts him #3 all time in December. Okheme is 40th because he's lost twice to Kris, but Okheme is also US #1 in the 60m. With top ranked times in multiple events, Okheme may leap frog Kris at the next update.
41
#2 returner PV returner behind Mondo. Initially had him further back in the rankings, but he had a huge vault over the weekend. He cleared 17-6 and made good attempts at 17-9.5. He's now just .5" off the top 10 AT list.
42
Briley is the only returner to jump over 48. While his 49-1.5 last indoor season is impressive, he was unable to make the final at Nationals.
43
Roger was 2nd in the AL State Meet in the 400m last year, but has already posted a big 400m PR this season. His 48.45 behind the two Moore's at Holiday is a massive indoor PR and even beats his outdoor best by half a second.
44
Lightner is a strong 200m/400m athlete. he ran extremely well at JOs outdoor in both events highlighted by a sub-21 200m. He mostly ran at local Arkansas indoor meets in 2017. If he travels out of state to find better competition then he could start to make a bigger impact on the national scene.
45
#5 returner in the LJ. He was 12th at Nationals and also mixes it up in the 55m and 300m. I had Willis on the bubble but he moved up to US #2 this month after popping a massive TJ PR of 47-9.5.
46
This squad never ceases to produce top sprint talent. Fogle is a top returner in both the 300m and 400m. He had some notable top 5 finishes at big meets last year, but Fogle already has a solid win in the 300m at AT&T this weekend. He's now ranked top 10 for the 300m this season.
47
Flournoy has good range from the 60m up to the 400m. He had a lot of success at local Michigan meets but struggled at Nationals last year.
48
Draper is the lone Utah athlete represented in the first MileSplit50 list. He's no slouch in the 60m. Draper's 6.84 is the #4 returning time and he won the event at Simplot.
49
Theo Woods raced well in VA last year, but breaks into the top 50 because of his accomplishments this season. Last indoor season only ten athletes managed to run under 2:30 in the 1000m. Woods has already accomplished that twice this season.
50
Conway has solid range from the 800m up to the 2 mile. He was 6th at the PA State Meet in the 800m and 2nd in the mile.

EXPLAINING MILESPLIT50:

This is the first ever release of the MileSplit50 indoor track rankings. These are subjective rankings of the top 50 athletes across all indoor track and field events. The more information I have, the more accurate these rankings will be. Feel free to reach out to me via email (travis.miller@flosports.tv) or on Twitter (@TravisMillerFlo)

Here are the attributes I considered when ranking athletes (in no particular order):

- IAAF points for ballpark numbers to compare performances across different events

- PRs

- Returning indoor track & field rankings

- Significant wins/results in previous indoor seasons

- More weight on "championship" events (I took stats and performances from ALL events into consideration, but championship events are more important at the national level)

- Participation in relays

- 2018 indoor track & field results

- Indoor competition frequency (these are rankings for indoor track & field, not necessarily the best all around XC/indoor/outdoor athletes)
