1A Girls State Series Rankings

by Sue O'Malley-Father Lopez Catholic High School somalley@fatherlopez.org

Team Rankings:

Commentary: Fall is in the air and cooler weather is hopefully upon us finally but the heat as be turned up as we enter the post season with district meets this week and region meets the following week! Let's see who is ready!

Rank. (Previous Rank) School = Comments

1. (1) Citrus Park Christian = Won the Hillsborough County XC Championships with a team average of 20:00. This team will have no problem winning the district 6 championship and their region championship.

2. (2) Circle Christian = Won the Amelia Island Pirate Invitational with a team average of 20:06. The Centurions will have no problem in their District 9 championship and the region meet.

3. (4) Oak Hall = Grace Blair will lead the eagles into district and region titles for sure.

4. (3) Maclay School = Has run tough all season. Their biggest post season competition will come in the region meet when they will go against the number #5 and #6 ranked schools of Providence and St. Joseph Academy! This will make for a great me3rd at the GCAC Championships to watch and see who is ready for states.

5. (6) Providence = Moves up one spot from two weeks ago. Mustangs gaining speed! Placed second to Circle Christian at the Amelia Pirate Invitational with a team average of 21:29. This district meet could be a one point difference between them and St. Joseph Academy! The #1's and #5 runners will determine the champion! Then in the region meet there is a 4 point difference between the two teams for the runner up spot to move onto states!

6. (5) St. Joseph Academy = Very persistent team and has worked really hard all season. Now it's time for this team to put it all together in post season with some really exciting racing with some of the best teams in the state.

7. (8) 1st Academy = Dropped to spots but don't count this team out. Ran on the very challenging Mt. Dora Christian Bible course last weekend for their tune up entering post season. District meet will be against them and Lakeland Christian. A 5 point spread will be tight and a great race. Then this team will move onto a very competitive region 3 and will battle Lakeland Christian, Holy Trinity and Father Lopez for a runner up spot to Circle Christian.

8. (9) Out of the Door Academy = Moving up one spot, Won the Brandeton Runners club Championship with a tem average of 21:59. Region 2 and region of death! Will race against the #1, #2 and #8 team in the state. Should move out to states.

9. (11) Canterbury School (Ft. Meyers) = Moves up 4 spots. Cougars are slowing gaining on their predators. Competed at the Annual Lely Trojan Invitational last week. Placed 3rd at the GCAC Championships this past weekend. Should easily win their district but will go up against the # and #2 teams in the state in their region. This team is very competitive and will finish 4th in the region meet to move on but some fantastic racing will be seen in this region.

10. (7) Lakeland Christian = Team has stayed in this top 7 spot all season. Can they move up in the post season.  A well-coached team for sure. District is a tough one with 1st Academy in the way their way for a team title, their #5 has a good race could be the 5 point swing difference! Will have to battle 1st Academy, Holy Trinity and Father Lopez at the region meet for a runner up spot.

11. (NR) King's Academy = This team been knocking on the door of the top 15 all season and roaring to the #11 spot. This team took a bit out of their competition at the Sebastian River Shark Invitational and finished 3rd with a team average of 22:02 at the Palm Beach Championships this weekend. Five points will be make the difference of a team title for this team. They will face the challenge of John Paul II for the team title with both #5 runners possibly determining the outcome. This too could be the case in their region meet with an 8 point swing either way.

12. (10) Holy Trinity = Finished 4th at the Sebastian River Shark Invitational. This team should win their district and will battle for the runner up spot in the very competitive region 3.

13. (NR) Baker Senior High School = Team is led by one of the top runners in the state Maya Espinosa. The team finished 3rd at the Okaloosa County Championships this weekend. Can't tell what meets they ran must have run a lot of dual and quad meets. The team should easily win their district and in another region of death-Region 1. Will probably finish 4th behind Maclay, Providence and St. Joseph Academy to move onto the state meet.

14. (12) Father Lopez = Drop two spots but finally put together a nice race at Mt. Dora Bible Christian Invitational to finish 3rd in the team standings. Beat 1st Academy of Orlando. This team is well coached and inspired everyday by the intercession of the saints. Now it is time for this team to really show what they have.

15. (13) Indian Rock Christian = Dropped two spots but still hanging with the top guns! Team finished 2nd at the Clearwater Catholic Championships this week with a team average of 22:59. This team may have had to go in taper mode early! District with Citrus Park Christian and Tampa Bay HEAT. Will try and beat the HEAT for runner up title. Then moving on to regions. This region 2 is almost a mini state meet! Will go against CPC, Oak Hall, Out of Door and Canterbury to finish 5th in the region meet to move out to states! Would love to be at this region meet!

Other teams to watch out for:

(14) Tampa Bay HEAT, (15) St. John Paul II

Individual Rankings:

Commentary: Things will certainly get heated up as teams and individuals go head to head in districts and especially in the region meets. Region 2 looks like the region of death and a small mini state meet! Best wishes to all the teams and individuals!

2A Girls State Series Rankings

by Carlos Maymi, St. Brendan HS / St. Thomas University, maymicarlos@yahoo.com

Team Rankings:

Commentary: Our team rankings were based on Virtual Rankings, Course Difficultly, and head to heads. 1-3 teams are solid. It is district week and there will be some tough races before regional and state championship.  With 10, 9, 7 all separated by less than 10 points.

Rank. (Previous Rank) School = Comments

1. (1) Pine Crest HS = this team has won every big invitational they have entered this year. they have been going through 2A no problem this year beating some of our top ten teams handily. With Schawartz and Lawlor about to break into 19's this season this team is deep in talent on the varsity squad.

2. (2) Montverde Academy = an extremely solid performance at Minneola, this young team should be in the mix when it comes to the state meet. Solid 1, 2 punch with Henne and Cardwell.

3. (3) Bolles HS = this team has been hard to place over the last couple of weeks, with a noticeable absence of Collier and lack of results. What it comes down to is this is bolles, and this is a team that is well coached. So, I still have doubts they are 3rd they still might be #2. As the state series unfolds we shall see.

4. (4) Trinity Prep = Didn't run all out at Dora, but I think is a team primed and ready to rock and roll over the next few weeks.

5. (5) Satellite HS = Cape Coast Conference champions and the best pack running team among any of the top ten teams.

6. (6) St. Brendan = Placed 3rd in a highly competitive race at Minneola losing to (3) Montverde but beating (10) Lake Highland prep.

7. (7) Rockledge HS = Third in the select race at pre state. Team time was better than Holy Name (raced Elite)

8. (14) Lake Highland Prep = Narrowly missed STB, seems to be gaining more ground every week. This team will go as far as Cisneros takes it.

9. (9) Bishop Kenny = this team has shown it has the goods at pre state, so for that they stay in the top ten.

10. (12) Tavares = I feel like I may have been sleeping on his team. It is hard to see results, but this team will be a top ten team at states I can feel it

3A Girls State Series Rankings

by Steve Farnsworth, Lecanto HS, farnsworthfarm@yahoo.com

Team Rankings:

Commentary:  The rankings are now based on times and performances since October 10th in order to keep the rankings as current as possible.  The preponderance of county and conference meets in this cycle can make things difficult as many meets are held on little-known courses or teams don't run all out to rest up for Districts.  Region 3 is becoming difficult to predict as many top teams alternate good and bad meets. This poll lists the top six teams in each region, plus the next best team as a wild card.  This format will leave out some teams that are top-25, but get bumped out by being in a tough region.  Team averages are given for reference only and are not the only basis for rankings, and do not follow them completely - course conditions, head to head competition, and team depth is also considered.  Times from known or suspected fast and slow courses have had time added or deducted to prevent ranking skew.

Rank, (Previous Rank), Team, Region, Team Average/Comments

1. (1) Chiles, 1,  19:45.  The Timberwolves didn't run hard in winning their lightly-attended home meet.

3A Boys State Series Rankings
by Kerry Mowlam, Ponte Vedra High School, kmowlam@yahoo.com

Team Rankings:

Commentary: Now it's time to perform.

Rank. School (Previous Rank) (Region) - Comments

1. Ocala Vanguard HS (1) (R2) -- They still holding tight. No real competition for past few weeks but earned top spot with great mid-season performances

2. Chiles -- (2) (R1) Getting closer to the No.1 as each meet passes. Runners 3-5 hold the key to State victory. Seconds will be the difference

3. Belen Jesuit (3) (R4) -- Can skip thru regions and be primed for Finals. Is this the year they claim that top spot they haven't had for 5 years. If their 2nd runner can get closer to top, they will be there

4. Creekside (4) (R1) -- There is huge leap to make top 3 that I just don't think they can make this year. But they have never won Regions but still win States. That's a team that knows how to peak at right time

5. Estero -- (5) (R3) -- Will be in the mix for top 5, with teams 6-10 vying for that spot. See Estero keeping them at bay

6. Fort Myers (6) (R3) -- A second or two from a few runners has them in top 5 at States. Been strong all season and getting better every meet

7. New Smyrna Beach (7) (R2) -- A great team performance at The Championship, may have them peaking at the right time. Could warranted a leap back to 4th, but have  them holding steady for now…..

8. Niceville (8) (R1) -- Excellent win at Okaloosa County Championship with 1-8 runners within 40 secs. Could be 4th at States, could be 9th. Insane how close the top 4-10 teams are.

9. Gulf Coast (9) (R3) -- Been very quiet since FSU, which makes me once again very nervous on how to rank them. Always known to hit post season to make a mark. Don't see it different this season either

10. Bartram Trail (10) (R1) -- Just seconds behind Creekside at Middleburg meet. Always in every top 10 ranking every year.

11. Robinson HS (9) (R3) -- Another solid performance, this time at Hillsborough County race. Once again staking their claim to be one of best in State this season

12. Naples (13) (R3) -- haven't ran since Oct 6, but don't see that being a factor. 3A rankings has them shown lower but I am sticking to this team previous ranking

13. Ponte Vedra (15) (R1) -- Good home meet win with nice results on a fast course. Team is getting faster at the right time of the year.

14. Fort Walton Beach (12) (R1) -- 2nd place at Okaloosa County Championship, right behind Niceville, and again with very tight pack effort. That's the way they roll….

15. Harmony (NR) (R2) -- Great results at Orange Belt has them top 15 for first time this year. Good time to start making a statement

Teams in Regions vying for the top 6 to get to States (shows region ranking):

Region 1

Lincoln (7th) (16th in the State may not get you to big dance in this region), Gulf Breeze, (8th), Stanton Prep (9th)

Region 2

Gainesville (4th), Seabreeze (5th), Land O Lakes, (6th), Sunlake and Mantanzas (trying to get into 6th spot)

Regions 3

Osceola (6th), Tampa Jesuit (7th but need to make up over 40 points in region race to get to the show)

Region 4

Viera (2nd), West Shore (3rd), Merritt Island (4th), South Fork (5th), Doral Academy (6th) Dwyer and Okeechobee are close behind

Individual Rankings:

Commentary: Everyone has been quiet since early October. So guess this is what they mean by "calm before the storm".  Kept all rankings same with one change for 15th place

4A Boys State Series Rankings

by Ryan Lowe, Lake Nona High, ryan.lowe@ocps.net

Team Rankings:

Commentary: Finally, the State Series is upon us.  This is when all of those early mornings of getting up in the summer and running in the heat, or rain, will hopefully pay off.  Unfortunately, some teams will see their seasons come to an end while others will feel the joy of making the trip to Tallahassee.  It looks like Regions 1 and 2 will have some very strong teams staying home but that is what makes sports so exciting.  Good luck to everyone over the next few weeks!

Rank. (Previous Rank) School = Comments

1. George Steinbrenner (2) = they keep getting better with each race.

2. Plant (5) = 47 second split puts them right in the mix for a title.

3. Oviedo High (1) = edged out Lake Mary for the SAC title.

4. St. Thomas Aquinas (3) = won the Junior Orange Bowl Invitational with 16:54 average.

5. Lake Mary (6) = their team average keeps getting lower.

6. St. Cloud (15) = 3-5 runners are running better, helping them win the Orange Belt.

7. Newsome (9) = 68 second split will be key to qualifying for State.

8. Sarasota (4) = we know their #1 will be up there, will the rest of the team do their job?

9. Columbus (8) = history says they'll be higher.

10. Lyman (7) = #5 keeps improving to help them secure a spot.

11. St. Petersburg (12) = they will need their best to qualify out of the toughest region.

12. Wharton (14) = I have them on the outside looking in for the state meet.

13. Lake Minneola (11) = team average really dropped after their last race, they seem to peaking.

14. Fleming Island (13) = another team looking to ride early season momentum for a berth in Tallahassee.

15. Spanish River (10) = cream of the crop in Region 3.

Teams I think will qualify for State from each Region:

Region 1 -- Oviedo, Lake Mary, Lyman, Lake Minneola, Fleming Island, Dr. Phillips

Region 2 -- Steinbrenner, Plant, St. Cloud, Newsome, Sarasota, St. Petersburg

Region 3 -- Spanish River, Palm Beach Central, Coral Springs, Boca Raton, Martin County, Coral Glades

Region 4 -- St. Thomas, Columbus, Ferguson, Braddock, Coral Reef, Coral Park

Individual Rankings:

Commentary: There was not much movement here because most of the guys won their conference races and/or put in good showings as they concluded the regular season.  Now it comes down to which guy is going to be able to put together a few good races in November.

1. (1) Benjamin Hartvigsen, 11 - Sarasota = has been steady through each of his four races this season.

3. (3) Bryce Bell, 12 -- Lyman = won the SAC Championship with a 15:57.

4. (4) Canaan St. Lewis, 11 -- Lake Mary = runner-up finish to Bell at SAC.

5. (5) Andrew Miller, 12 -- Fleming Island = 16:10 at FSU which was good enough for a top-10 finish.

6. (6) Timothy Doyle, 12 -- Freedom (Orlando) = easily won the Metro Conference Championship.

7. (7) Deshay Fernandes, 12 -- Columbus = won the GMAC in 16:21, good to see him healthy this post-season.
