Four more names have been added to the high school Dream race fields for the 100 and mile at the adidas Grand Prix on June 14th after the auto qualifier races at the Kansas Relays on Saturday.
In the 100 meter dash, a strong tail winded benefited by Alleandra Watt of Pine Creek High School (CO) and Michael Wells of Cleveland NJROTC High School (MO) to run two of the faster times in the country in all conditions. Watt had a +4.3 wind reading behind her to run a season best clocking of 11.47 in a finals victory.
Wells had much stiffer competition in his finals coming from Kansas state champion Joe Reagan, but was still able to prove himself clearly as the swiftest by taking the race with a tenth of second as a buffer in a 10.49 clocking.
The windy conditions which benefited the 100 dash sprinters was a disadvantage for the distance runners in the 1600 as the pace and times were slowed down by the winds. The strategic races benefited both Stephanie Jenks of Linn-Mar High School (IA) and Spencer Haik of Glendale High School (MO) with both possessing strong closing speed. Each was doubling back off wins from Friday's events with Jenks taking first in the girls 800 with a time of 2:12, while Haik had run a 9:05 3200 PR in the 3200 yesterday.
Jenks, a 4:44 miler last year as a freshmen, ended up winning the girls 1600 in Lawrence decisively by 5 seconds ahead of fellow Iowa runner Rebekah Topham of Griswold (2nd, 5:02.87) in a final time of 4:57.48.
After closing with a sub 60 last 400 in the 3200 win on Friday, Spencer Haik did it again with a 58.5 second last lap to outduel defending Drake Relays mile champion Josh Evans of Linn-Mar (IA) to repeat as Kansas Relays 1600 champ in 4:15.30.
