Brigham defends pole vault title

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Mill Valley senior Emily Brigham repeated as the Kansas Relays pole vault champion Friday after clearing 12 feet, 5 ½ inches, which is a season-best mark for her.

Brigham, who won the event at 12-3 ½ last year, said the cold, swirling winds affected everyone the same, but it may have hampered her chances of matching her best vault of 13-6 ¼.

“The wind kind of switched around a little bit, but it was the same for everybody,” Brigham said. “It was just whoever handled the conditions the best. You just have to stay focused. This season has been a little colder. We deal with it the best we can, and it’s just how it is.”

Brigham still has the long jump on Saturday, and she won that event last year too with an 18-10. She has signed to jump at the University of South Dakota.
