Kansas high school cross country standouts Molly Born and Emily Venters finished in the top sixth of the field at the Nike Cross Nationals today in Portland, Ore.


Born, from Shawnee Mission Northwest and a two-time class 6A state champion, placed 23rd in the national championships with a time of 18:06.


Venters, who won the 6A state title in 2013 and 2014, was 32nd at the Nike nationals, clocking a time of 18:26.


Colorado's Brie Oakley ran away from the field, winning in a time of 17:10.03. She was 28 seconds better than Oregon sophomore Ember Strattion, who outkicked the chase park to finish second.


There were 200 runners in this year's national championship field. Manlius Cross Country won the girls' team title with 41 points, 140 better than the second place team.


There were no Kansas athletes competing in the boys' championship race.
