Male Runner of the Week : Week 2

After a dominating win at the Hesston Invitational putting a minute on second place in the Class 1-3 Senior Boys race, Cory Donley has been selected as the Week 2 Male Runner of the Week.  Donley had a phenomenal junior year winning the Class 3 State Title in Cross Country and the 1600 and 3200 on the track.  After putting over a minute and a half on the field at the Abilene Invitational on August 30th, Donley continued his domination winning his race at the Hesston Invitational by just over a minute and running the fastest time of the day by 11 seconds.  His time of 15:55 is also the fastest time in the state so far this year.

Kansas MileSplit: Cory, congratulations on your win at the Hesston Invitational last Thursday.  You put over a minute on second place.  Talk us through the race and how it played out.

Cory Donley: I talked to my coach about what I needed to do, and we knew I had to go out and have a conservative first mile. Then I had to pick it up in the second mile and then go all out the third mile.

KM: You seem to be off to a hot start winning two straight meets.   How was your summer training?

CD: My summer training consisted of running anywhere from 4 to 15 miles, 6 days a week, and attending a cross country camp at the United States Naval Academy.

KM: What other meets will you be running this year?

CD: I will be running at Clay Center this Thursday and then I'll be looking forward to running Rimrock the next Saturday. From that point on, I will be working towards league, regionals, and state.

KM: What has been your favorite high school race so far?

CD: My favorite high school race so far was the state meet last year at Rimrock Farms. Rimrock is my favorite cross country course I've ever ran on in any race throughout my high school career.

KM: You had a great year last year winning three state titles (cross country and two on the track). What are your goals for your senior season?

CD: My goals for my senior season are to try and repeat what I did last year and do even better, and I also want to have fun while I work as hard as I can.

KM: Thanks, Cory and best of luck on the rest of your year!
