WATCH: Morgan Stewart And Julia Heymach Go Toe-To-Toe In The 800

Houston Jersey Village senior Morgan Stewart and Houston Lamar senior Julia Heymach came up with two of the top 800m times in the country on Thursday night at the Class 6A Area 17-18 meet at Cypress Falls High School.

Stewart dropped a 2:08.70 time for U.S. No.6, while Heymach ran 2:08.74 for U.S. No. 7.

Both ladies ran a somewhat strategic race, letting Houston Cypress Falls' Jean Jenkins do the early pace-setting. Stewart and Heymach sat toward the front/middle of the pack and waited on the first lap. With about 400m to go, Stewart and Heymach pushed to the front and began to throw down.

With 300m to go, Heymach had a slight lead on Stewart, but Stewart threw on the jets in the last 200m -- showing her 53.81 400m speed.

At that point, Heymach held on and pushed hard to the line, almost matching Stewart's kick. As the times tell, Stewart just edged out Heymach -- but they will meet again at the region meet for round two.

Jenkins ran 2:13.85, finishing third, and Wonders Oguejiofor, of Cypress Springs, ran 2:16.05, finishing fourth to round out the region meet qualifiers.
