Illness Cuts Cailie Logue's Cross Country Season Short

No. 2 ranked Cailie Logue is ending her cross country season after being diagnosed with mycoplasma pneumonia this week.

The Girard High School senior said her doctor told her that she may have been running with the illness for as long as the past three weeks.

"Since I haven't recovered, [the doctor] said I should take some time off to recover or it could really set me back, and highly recommended I don't race next week," Logue said via text. "So I decided to take a couple weeks off to recover and start getting ready for track season!"

The 10-time Kansas state champion was considering racing the Foot Locker Midwest Regional after posted a disappointing 59th place finish at the NXN Heartland Regional this past weekend. She ran the entire race within the top five individuals, which would have secured her a spot at Nike Cross Nationals had she not collapsed 100 meters from the finish line.

Cailie Logue ran in the front pack for most of the NXN Heartland Regional, but struggled home in the final straightaway:

Last year, she took runner-up honors at the Heartland Regional and third overall at NXN, which made her the top returning athlete in the nation.

The Iowa state signee was named the USAF Athlete of the Month after setting the Kansas state record for 5K in cross country at 16:45.75 and winning her fourth consecutive state cross country title. Story here.

Luckily, there's plenty to look forward to in the spring, as Logue looks to replicate her legendary 2016 outdoor state meet performance that saw her sweep the 800m, 1600m and 3200m, all in Class 4A state record times.
