3A Boys
With two medalists and all five scorers in the top 24, Halstead managed to repeat somewhat easily as 3A champions with 52 points, improving upon their 61 from 2014. They also won by (nearly) the same margin, with Riley County taking second 39 points back with 91. Riley County utilized the strength of their top three to pull away from the rest of the field. It was Council Grove who took the final podium spot, and they utilized a solid pack to outpace 4th place Scott Community -- they had a 46 second 1-5 spread, and only a 17 second 2-5 spread behind their #1. Their top five were all in the top 46.
The individual race saw the pre-race favorite, Halstead's Steven Cline, come away with a 12-second victory with a time of 17:07. Not quite the exciting finish like last year, but a solid win for Cline nonetheless, and he is now a state champion and three-time top-10 medalist with one more year to go. Luke Oatney of Pleasant Ridge, a sophomore, was runner up with a time of 17:19, holding off senior Luccas Schmucker of Hesston, who had a great race to run 17:21. It was his 3rd 3A State XC medal, as he finish 13th in 2013 and 19th last year. Andrew Hess, a senior out of Hays-Thomas More Prep, joined these three as the only four in the race under 17:30 with his time of 17:27.
