Bartels, Stumbaugh win KU hurdles

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The wind took an obvious toll on Hazelwood Central’s Chris Wright in the 300-meter hurdles at Friday’s KU Relays.

Wright had the lead in the final timed heat until he lost a little steam heading into the last hurdle, allowing Nick Bartels of Papillion-LaVista (NE) to overtake him at the line for a 39.28 victory. Wright finished second in 39.88.

“It’s cool, but I can do better,” Wright said. “I have to get better with that and keep my form strong. It’s very good competition; I love coming to the KU Relays.”

In the girls’ race, Har-Ber (Springdale, AR) junior Payton Stumbaugh showed she is rounding back into shape following a back injury as she won the 300 hurdles in 44.23.

Stumbaugh, the defending Arkansas state champion in both hurdle races, tore a disc in her back in the pole vault during the indoor season. She has put that event on hiatus while she continues to recover.

“This definitely boosts my confidence in myself,” Stumbaugh said. “The wind was kind of bad on that straightaway and probably affected my time a little bit.”
